WONG: A gas blast at a construction site in China `s southwestern province of Sichuan has killed at least 42 people,according to Chinese media. This is the latest in a near constant string of mine disasters, which have claimed thousands of lives.
Eleven were injured in the explosion on Thursday in a highway tunnel under construction between the cities of Dujiangyan and Wenchuan. Most of the victims were construction workers.
The exact count of dead and wounded has not yet been produced.
China has become known for poor safety standards across the board in its industrial sector. Pressure to build roads and expand the country`s infrastructure has, along with simple greed, has led to cutting corners on the already meager safety standards.
